Partnership in World Class Surgical Training

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has revolutionized the field of surgery, offering numerous benefits over traditional open surgery, including reduced trauma, less blood loss, lower risk of complications, decreased risk of infection, minimal scarring, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery time.

Given these advantages, it is understandable why surgery residents and practicing surgeons are increasingly focusing on MIS and Robotic techniques. But what happens when something goes wrong during a laparoscopic or robotic surgery, and you have to switch to an open procedure?

Hartford Healthcare’s Tallwood Urology & Kidney Institute partnered with Memorial Sloan Kettering to develop an innovative and valuable Open Surgical Training Program for the MSK Urology Fellows. Held at CESI, the program utilized customized task trainers and models to practice wound closure, tying sutures in deep anatomical spaces, vessel ligation and vascular connections. With one on one instruction with expert Urology and Vascular Attendings from both institutions, the direct mentorship allowed the Fellows to hone these necessary hand motor skills in a controlled, supportive environment.

The program also utilized CESI’s Pre-Clinical Lab to practice vascular control, ureteral anastomosis and repair, partial nephrectomies and aortic injury and repair. This advanced, comprehensive Open Surgical Training Program enhanced the MSK Fellows confidence and exposure to these complex and intricate procedures that they will encounter throughout their medical careers.

While every effort is made to ensure surgeries go as planned, complications happen. The best way to prepare is through extensive practice in a safe, controlled training environment. CESI is proud to partner with exceptional physicians from Hartford Healthcare Tallwood Urology & Kidney Institute and Memorial Sloan Kettering to deliver an outstanding open surgical training course.

This partnership and others like it are designed to ensure that surgeons are well-equipped with the necessary skills and confidence to handle complex procedures and unexpected challenges. The emphasis on hands-on practice, personalized instruction, and the use of advanced training facilities underscores CESI’s commitment to excellence in surgical education and patient care.
