Medtronic Partners with Hartford Hospital for Exposure to Surgical Environment
- August 22, 2024
Medtronic is the largest medical device company in the world. They operate in 150 countries and employ over 95,000 people worldwide. Their portfolio offers solutions for 70+ health conditions and they have invested $2.7B in Research & Development to continue to change the landscape of healthcare.
Hartford Hospital has a long-standing partnership with Medtronic across all its Groups – Minimally Invasive Therapies, Diabetes, Restorative Therapies, and Cardiac and Vascular. In 2017, Medtronic began FDA testing for their soft-tissue robot, the Hugo, at the Center for Education, Simulation & Innovation (CESI), a device to rival the only robot on the market, Intuitive’s Da Vinci System. Hartford Hospital clinical experts from multiple specialties participated in these trials, lending their expertise and experience to develop a next generation of surgical robotics.
Hartford Hospital’s relationship with Medtronic continues to strengthen in other ways. Many of the engineers in the Minimally Invasive Therapies Group, located in North Haven, have limited access and exposure to surgical environments. As they look to innovate and improve on their surgical devices, they need real-world knowledge on how these devices are handled in the Operating Rooms. They turned to Hartford Hospital for help.
Starting in September 2023, Hartford Hospital has offered a monthly opportunity for Medtronic employees to observe a live surgical case from our Operating Rooms. To date, we have livestreamed 9 surgeries to a total of 1,727 Medtronic employees in 19 different countries.
With great thanks to Dr. Odin Kuiper, Dr. Joseph Wagner, Dr. Mario Katigbak, Dr. Steve Shichman, Dr. Pavlos Papasavas, Dr. Daniel Walker, Dr. Lindsay Bliss, Dr. Amy Brown and Dr. Anoop Meraney, they graciously offered to have their cases observed and answered over 300 questions from this very engaged group.
This is just another example of how Hartford Hospital Clinical Experts are engaging with industry partners to change the future of healthcare.
