CESI's Collaboration with the U.S. Military

CESI has maintained a longstanding collaboration with the branches of the United States Military to deliver realistic and immersive medical training and education to our front-line defenders. We have recreated the narrow corridors of a nuclear submarine to instruct the Independent Duty Corpsmen—the sole medical providers on board—on how to care for their fellow sailors in areas such as primary care, dental care, mental health, and traumatic injuries. Our partnership with the Army involves simulating medical emergencies in the dark, with various distractions, within the confines of a Blackhawk helicopter. We consistently work with the Air Force National Guard and Army National Guard to ensure their personnel are honing skills to remain comfortable, confident, and competent in delivering medical care in any setting. As a National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) certified site, we offer the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) Course, enabling all military branches to train in providing medical care under fire.

We deeply appreciate the daily sacrifices made by these men and women to safeguard our nation, and it is an honor for us to offer these trainings to ensure they are well-prepared to support one another in challenging environments.

GI Bill® Benefits Now Accepted for Emergency Medical Services Education

Hartford Hospital is honored to advance its support for military members by collaborating with the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide GI Bill® benefits for our Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic certification programs. Since 1944, the GI Bill® has assisted eligible veterans and their families in funding education or training courses and covering associated costs to better prepare them for careers beyond the military. Schools undergo a rigorous application process to ensure they meet the high standards established by the VA. Hartford Hospital School of Allied Health is proud to have achieved the Yellow Ribbon designation.

Overview of Hartford Hospital EMS Certification Programs

Hartford Hospital’s School of Allied Health provides training and certification programs for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals, featuring EMT and Paramedic certification courses.

The EMT course imparts essential medical knowledge and life-saving techniques, teaching students how to evaluate the medical needs of the sick or injured, deliver immediate care, and prioritize treatment for the most at-risk patients. This 16-week course comprises 250 classroom hours and 16 hours of observation in the Emergency Room or with a local ambulance service. Instructional topics cover basic life support, CPR, airway management, bleeding control, shock recognition, trauma care, medical emergencies, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics.

The Paramedic course expands upon EMT training and represents the pinnacle of emergency responder education. Spanning four semesters of 15 weeks each, it offers an in-depth exploration of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, advanced life support care for both traumatic and medical emergencies outside the hospital, scene management, and EMS operations.

Adam Ordway, an EMS Educator, Paramedic, Firefighter, and Army Veteran, played a pivotal role in securing the Yellow Ribbon designation for Hartford Hospital. A staunch supporter of the EMS and Military programs at Hartford Hospital, he has held leadership positions in both the EMT and Paramedic programs. As a certified instructor for TCCC and Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC), he is also a skilled educator for military training programs. Adam’s wealth of experience, expertise, and commitment ensures that veterans feel welcomed and supported in our classes. Adam remarks, “I’m looking forward to helping other veterans further their education in the way others have helped me in the past.”
