CESI: A Beacon for Resident Training

Have you ever wondered how physicians get good at their craft? How do they manage to think so quickly and critically in high stress moments? How do they know when surgical interventions are necessary and how do they keep their composure? The answer? Practice! From early on in their residency, most physicians have access to sophisticated training facilities to hone their procedural, surgical and assessment skills.

Throughout the months of June and July, CESI welcomed 18 different residencies and fellowships through the University of Connecticut for boot camp – an extensive introduction to clinical skills and simulation. From basic suture skills to advanced microsurgical techniques, we work with residencies to create customized curriculum to enhance real world surgical and procedural training for physicians.

Especially nowadays with technology changing so rapidly – physicians have to spend time learning devices and practicing interventions in a safe, training environment. No one wants to be fumbling with buttons and cords while patients need care. For our Hartford Healthcare providers and UConn residents, they have 24/7 access to CESI’s training facility to hone these skills, get exposed to high risk, low frequency events, and build confidence in their clinical skills.

Imagine if you were a patient and your provider entered the room and casually mentioned this was the first time they were going to attempt this particular procedure. When it comes to me and my loved ones, I want to know my physician has logged the hours of practice. I want to know my doctor has trained at a facility like CESI.
